A magnificent effort by Kambrie Hinkins hoisted the Lady Spartans to a 10-9 win over Grand on Tuesday in Castle Dale.
Hinkins racked up five RBIs on four hits. She homered in the first inning, doubled in the second inning, tripled in the third inning and singled in the fifth inning for the cycle.
Each team blasted the other’s pitching, with 19 total runs and 22 hits during the game.
The game was back-and-forth heading into the seventh, with five lead changes.
The Spartans took the lead in the seventh inning and held on for the victory. An error scored Jarica Huntington for the final run.
Ashton Bell got the win for the Emery Spartans despite allowing six runs over six innings. Bell struck out seven, walked six and gave up four hits.
Home runs for Emery came when Hinkins homered in the first inning and Bell homered in the first and fourth innings.
The top of the first saw Grand take an early lead, 1-0.
The Spartans answered Grand’s first inning with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Emery scored on a solo home run by Hinkins, a solo home run by Bell, and an RBI double by Amber Peterson.
The Lady Spartans matched their one-run fourth inning with one more in the seventh.
Emery (2-2, 1-0 Region 15) will play at Gunnison (2-4, 0-0 Region 16) on Wednesday. The Lady Spartans will then travel to St. George for a three-day tournament beginning on Thursday.
