Down 12-3 in the third inning, the Emery Lady Spartans exploded for 13 runs spanning the third and fourth innings to eventually take a 17-15 win over Grand Tuesday afternoon. It was the Region 15 opener for both teams.
After each team scored three runs in the first inning, the Red Devils plated seven more in the second and two more in the third before Emery’s huge eight-run explosion in the bottom half of the same inning. The Lady Spartans tacked on five more in the fourth and one more in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Raegan Rasmussen went 4-4 with four RBIs, bashing three doubles and a single. Four other players had two hits apiece in the game, with Morgann Donaldson, Bailey Huggard, AdriAnne Childs and Madisyn Alton going a combined 8-15 with two home runs and two doubles. Huggard and Donaldson bashed the home runs in the game, with each knocking in four runs apiece. As a team, Emery was 16-32 from the plate.
After Huggard struggled to begin the game in the circle, Shayleigh Hreinson and Kaejha Johnson pitched the final five innings, giving up just three earned runs and nine hits.
Emery (1-2, 1-0 Region 15) will take part in the March Warm-Up in St. George this weekend, beginnning with Eldorado High School from Las Vegas on Saturday.
