The Emery High Lady Spartans won their opening-round State Tournament game in dramatic fashion over Wasatch at Cedar High School in Cedar City on Saturday.

Emery secured the 11-10 victory when short-stop Bryton Hess snagged a hard line drive and tagged a Wasatch base runner to end the game. The moment was one of redemption for Hess who had two errors earlier in the inning.

After falling behind early 3-0, Emery opened the scoring in the third inning on Shelby Mason’s two-run home run. The Spartan offense then came alive scoring nine runs over the next three frames.

Wasatch stormed back with six runs in the final two innings, but winning pitcher Whitney Roper worked through adversity to induce the double play and finish the game.

Makiah Sherman laced an RBI triple, and Jaiden Huntington and Jeridi Price both recorded doubles for the Spartans.

Emery out hit Wasatch 13-7.

Emery will meet Cedar at 2 pm at the Little Valley fields on Thursday in St. George.
