Skilled nursing care is very different than care provided at an assisted living facility.

In a skilled nursing facility, a nurse (RN or LPN) is on duty in the building 24 hours per day. The aides to the nurses are certified and must pass a skill test and other assessments in order to obtain their licenses. In a skilled nursing facility, nurses and certified medication aides are able to pass medications. In a skilled nursing facility, there is a medical necessity for the patient to be in the building. It may be for uncontrolled diabetes with insulin dependence. While the patient may be independent, this is categorized as a skilled nursing need because of the requirement to monitor, dose and inject a medication.
