Letter to the Editor: Flag on Balanced Rock

Until someone claims responsibility for the recent activity atop Balanced Rock, I am unsure how to respond to its appropriateness.

If it were in protest, then a dialogue should be opened. Inciteful adjectives are not helpful.

Have not driven by recently, is the U.S. Flag an all-weather flag, with a spotlight shining on it at night, and not touching the ground?

The U.S. Flag Code addresses the rules for flying flagsrain or shine. It is specific on what to do in the case of rain. The United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, states: “The flag should not be displayed on days when the weather is inclement, except when an all-weather flag is displayed.”

According to the US Flag Code, all American flags should be displayed from sunrise to sunset every day. Lowering the flag at night is an ultimate sign of respect for Old Glory. But like many rules, there is an exception. You can keep your flag flying 24-hours if it is properly illuminated during all hours of darkness.

IF not, then we should be offended.

What was the safety issue?
