Letter to the Editor/ETV News:

I’d like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the Helper community for their warm reception, particularly on becoming one of Utah’s rare dark sky communities. I’m immensely grateful to the Helper Public Library and Diana Grant for inviting me to present “Ole’s Dark Sky Journey” and to council member Michelle Goldsmith for her support in holding up the vivid illustrations by Cache County artist Victoria Speck that magically brought our children’s book to life!

My journey into children’s literature began unexpectedly in the wake of the 2008 California Tea Fire. I moved to Utah and founded Lucky Penny Publications. The adventures of Buzzy the bee in “Buzzy and the Red Rock Canyons” were inspired by my adventures and witnessing Utah’s iconic national parks, monuments, and state parks.

Each book release sends me on a road trip, like the recent ones to Helper, Sunnyside, Torrey, Loa and Hanksville. My aim is to reach all of Utah’s 29 counties.

Student interactions, like the inspiring chat with a budding third-grade author at Bruin Point Elementary, rekindle memories of my own childhood teachers who shaped my passion for literature. My hope is to share my love of reading and writing, and the importance of nature in our lives with our next generation as I make my way throughout Utah.

I’m deeply thankful to Carbon County for aiding and welcoming me in this mission of celebrating Utah’s Dark Skies.

With sincere gratitude,

Melissa C. Marsted
