With more than 8,000 athletes in attendance during the Utah Summer Games over the weekend in Cedar City, several local community members participated as well as one breaking a record. This event is a festival for athletes regardless of age and abilities with over 900 events to compete in.
Jimmy Jewkes, a Carbon County resident as well as the Carbon High School track team coach, broke the record for the triple jump in the 35-39 year old division. Before breaking the record with 36-05.75, John Cowden from West Jordan held the record with 35-02.50 back in 2010. Brennen Ames broke the record as well but fell slightly behind Jewkes. Ames took a 36-05.50 score. Jewkes also took 2nd place in both long and high jump.
Jewkes’s wife, Heidi, and their two sons also competed in the festival. Heidi took first place in the 35-39 age group in the 1500 while their son Traxton took first place in the high jump, for the second year in a row, and Jaxson taking 4th place right behind his brother in the 13-14 year old division for high jump.
Todd Hinkins, Nadene Hinkins and Jerimiah Davies also competed at the event. Todd took three first place wins in the 100 meter dash, long jump and high jump in the 60-64 category. Nadene, Todd’s wife, also took three place wins in the 80 meter hurdle, 100 meter dash and the long jump in the 55-59 year old category for women. Davies competed in the 100 meter dash and nabbed a first place win.
