Carbon Dino Luke Hansen recently attended and competed in the 2017 USA Biology Olympiad competition. There were over 10,000 students registered at this event, representing 44 states and three national schools, all vying for top scores.
For the open exam, 5,489 students were registered. The average score for this tier of testing out of a possible 50 was 17.24. The score needed in this section to become a semifinalist was 24.21. Hansen did well in this portion, scoring 26.81.
The number of students competing in the semifinalist section was significantly reduced from the open exam. In this section of testing, 567 students participated. The average score out of a possible 204 was 103.43. The needed score the compete on the finalist level was 138.91.
While Hansen did well in this section as well and scored a 122.17, he unfortunately was unable to compete at the next level. However, he represented Carbon High School proudly in the competition and was in the top 10%.
