Press Release

Utah State Eastern sophomore pitcher Jarod Lessar signed a National Letter of Intent with Brigham Young University on Tuesday.

The Price native signed with the Cougars because of the recruiting process with the coaches and the program.

“They wanted to sign me right away and made me feel wanted. I really like the coaching staff and the whole recruiting process with the recruiting visits,” said Lessar.

Lessar signed with BYU during the new early signing period that came into effect this fall. For Lessar, signing early will help him get ready for his final year as an Eagle.

“I wanted to lock myself in and focus on this season and not worry about recruiting visits during the season,” said Lessar.

Utah State Eastern head coach Scott Madsen believes BYU is getting a player who will be one of the best pitchers from the junior college ranks.

“They are getting a good kid with a great personality. He has the potential to be one of the best pitchers in the league this year,” said Madsen.

He will finish his junior college eligibility with USU Eastern this Spring before transferring to BYU.

Last season, Lessar pitched in nine games for the Eagles and had 16 strikeouts. Before arriving at USU Eastern, Lessar grayshirted one season at Southern Utah University in football. In 2017, the Eagles finished the season 16-34 overall with 9-23 record in conference.

The 2018 USU Eastern baseball season will begin in January when the Eagles travel to Henderson, Nev. for the ACCAC Tournament.
