Local Teams Compete in Carbon Basketball Tournament

The girls’ basketball teams from both Carbon and Emery High competed in the inaugural Carbon Tournament Friday and Saturday in Price. Each team scored first game victories and met each other in the final game of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

During Emery’s first game, the team found their niche early against Manti. After outscoring Manti 16-2 in the third quarter, the Lady Spartans cruised to a 70-45 win. Emily Olsen led the way for Emery with 15 points, five assists and one steal. Bailey Rasmussen scored 13 points and Ashton Bell chipped in 10 points.

Carbon also faced Manti in their first game of the tournament. Following a 16-9 run in the final minutes of the game, Carbon defeated Manti 49-37. Jerika Morgan finished with a double-double for the Lady Dinos with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Scoggins finished as the team’s high scorer with 14 points.

In the final game of the tournament, Carbon and Emery faced each other in a highly heated matchup. At the end of the third, Emery led Carbon 29-22. The Lady Dinos retaliated with a 21-16 scoring drive in the fourth quarter, but the effort was not enough to seal the win. Emery defeated Carbon by two points, 45-43.

Three players scored in double digits for the Lady Spartans, which included Olsen with 14 points, Rasmussen 13 and Camry Johnson added 10 points. Overall, the team shot 68.2% from the free throw line to get past Carbon.

Oliver led the way for the Lady Dinos in scoring with 10 points. Scoggins followed with nine points and Lindsey Blanc finished with eight.

Carbon will not play again until Dec. 17 when they face Uintah on the road. Emery will play Delta on the road Thursday.
