PRICE, Utah – Utah State Eastern freshman Madison Loftus named an All-American by the NJCAA.
Loftus was named Honorable Mention All-American by the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee for the 2016-2017 season.
Out of 221 NJCAA Division I, Loftus is one of 20 student-athletes to receive All-American status, something she was surprised to receive.
“I was really surprised but I am definitely excited more than anything, I am still in shock over it,” Loftus said.
In her first year as an Eagle, Loftus averaged 15 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2 assists per game. She also finished in the top ten nationally in free-throw percentage with 85.7%.
Loftus broke the school record for three-point shots made in a season with 85, a record held previously by Utah State Eastern women’s basketball head coach Chelsey Warburton.
“I am extremely proud of Madison Loftus for being named Honorable Mention All-American. She is a talented athlete, wonderful teammate and very deserving of this award,” Warburton said.
In addition to being an All-American, Loftus was named first team all-conference by the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Loftus believes her team’s play during their conference schedule is what helped her have the season that she had.
“I think we definitely improved from last to this season, especially in conference when it matters most,” Loftus said.
She averaged 16.3 points per game against conference opponents in the regular season. Only fellow NJCAA All-American Tia Hay from SLCC had more points per game.
This is the first time in five years that a Utah State Eastern student-athlete has been named an All-American.
The Utah State Eastern women’s basketball finished their 2016-2017 season with a 16-16 overall record and finished fourth in the SWAC.
