Many community members, friends and family braved the cold weather to remember their loved ones that have passed away at the annual Helper City Luminary Ceremony on Wednesday evening.

Mark Montoya, one of the Utah’s Christmas Town directors, welcomed all and explained that many years ago they were approached and given the idea to host the ceremony as a part of the activities each holiday season. While Montoya stated they were unsure how it would be received, it was quickly learned that many appreciated the opportunity.

Beginning with a special holiday prayer, Montoya then recited a poem that spoke on “Christmas in Heaven”, followed by a musical number with the same title. The poems, which were framed, were then given to two individuals present that had recently lost a loved one.

The ceremony also acts as a fundraiser for the holiday festivities, with all present able to donate a fee to receive a light to place on the grave of those that they have lost.

Next on the roster for Utah’s Christmas Town is the chili dinner that works in conjunction with the electric light parade. Each will take place on Dec. 6 and 7. The chili dinner begins at 6 p.m., with the parade following at 7 p.m. On Dec. 7, those that wish to have a hearty breakfast with Santa Claus himself should visit the Helper Civic Auditorium beginning at 8 a.m.
