Earlier this month, Eagles’ guard Madison Loftus was named First Team All-Region by the Scenic West Athletic Conference. In her freshman campaign, Loftus led her team in scoring, averaging 15.1 points per game and finished the season as the third highest scorer in the conference.
“I was really excited when I found out. It’s neat to see everything pay off, and it’s always cool to get recognition for your school,” she said.
All season, the Eagles’ high-energy, fast-paced style of basketball allowed Loftus to thrive in each game and showcase a wide variety of talents.
Her ball-handling skills and ability to get shots off with relative quickness and ease led to scoring in droves, especially from behind the three-point line.
She shot 32.7 percent from the arc, and her 85-converted threes broke the single-season school record previously held by head coach Chelsey Warburton from her time as a player at USUE.
Coach Warburton commented on Loftus being named All-Region and praised her performance throughout the season.
“I was very excited for Madison to receive first team all-region, well deserved on her part. She had a great freshman year… Madison is not only a great shooter but has also improved her game by being able to get to the basket to finish or get to the free throw line [85 percent efficiency from the free-throw line, ranked ninth nationally in the NJCAA] which is another area she excels at. She is a great teammate and leader as well,” Warburton said.
Loftus remains humble despite the award, acknowledging that her teammates share in her success and have played as large a role in her personal success as she has.
“The biggest factor [contributing to consistent play] would have to be my teammates and coaches. I never doubted that my teammates had my back, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls to be supported by,” she said. “They always brought me up when I was down and are some of my best friends. I always knew my coaches trusted and believed in me, and that made the biggest difference. I learned so much from them and I couldn’t have done anything without them.”
