Principal Steven Gordon welcomed the Emery School Board to Emery High on Wednesday evening. Thanking the board for their support, he gave a report on the school’s activities and programs.
“The number of students has increased and is projected to continue to do so,” he stated. The ninth graders seem to be fitting in well, according to Gordon.
At the school, new teachers include Bryant Snow, who is teaching construction, electrician, woods, medical terms, physiology and health science; and Dane Worwood, who teaches one-half day at Canyon View and then goes to the high school to teach robotics, engineering, CAD and cabinetry.
Gordon also announced that homework classes will be on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this year. Sept. 4-7 is safety week and fire, gas leak, earthquake and lockdown exercises will be practiced. Gordon also announced that test results for last year show that 22 AP tests were taken and 14 exams were passed. Of those, eight out of eight calculus AP exams were passed.
Superintendent Larry Davis then presented several names for hiring approval to the board. At Green River High School, Steffanee Bacon, Kathleen Goldman and Judith Trejo will fill part-time positions. Tracy Wareham will also be part time at Book Cliff Elementary. New cross county coaches at the middle schools are Jodi Wilson at San Rafael and Rick Bird at Canyon View. Kimberli Rasmussen is the new kindergarten teacher at Cottonwood while Shandy Magnuson, Anjanette Shipley and KimberLee Willams will be part-time employees. At Cleveland Elementary, Desiree Richardson, Nanette Harrison and Adrian Jensen are new employees. Natalie Baantjer will be part-time at Ferron Elementary. Morgann Donaldson was appointed the assistant volleyball coach at Emery High. The board approved these appointments.
Elementary supervisor Ralph Worthen reported that the third grade Dibels testing scores show a typical or better growth of 92.01% in the district. Only ten districts scored higher and the state target is 47.8%. The average score for the state was 71.9%, which includes charter schools.
Extracurricular pay schedules were discussed for employees, but this action was tabled for further study by the board.
Superintendent Davis also announced that the State School Board Superintendent and some board members will visit Emery District on Sept. 18.
