Monday night several candidates across the State came to Carbon County’s ” Meet the Candidates Night”.

Delynn Fielding acted as moderator of the event and welcomed participants and spectators to the debate. Candidates were required to answer questions in a certain time frame with their opponents, and those running unopposed or did not have an opponent present , were given ten minutes to explain their campaign.

The candidates included: Democrat Soren Simonsen, vying for a seat in the U.S. House; Peter S. Cooke, running В for Utah Governor; Representative for District #69, Christine Watkins, running for a second term; and a representative of the Orrin Hatch campaign.

Libertarian Andrew McCullough , and Democrat, Dee Smith, were the first debate of the evening running for Utah Attorney General, followed by what many considered to be the main event; the debate between Carbon County Commission hopefuls, Casey Hopes (R), and Mikel Johnson (D).

Johnson and Hopes were both allowed to introduce themselves within a two minute time frame, then the candidates were asked random questions from a sealed envelope. Topics of the debate included support of local business, support of the community and each individual candidate’s top three priorities for the county.

“Our water would be my main concern, without our water, we won’t have economic growth, jobs, or residents,” Johnson said.

Hopes believes water is also an important issue,”I think we need to continue to fight to keep our water, but also need to update and maintain our irrigation systems,” Hopes said.
