Merchants Blank Lone Peak, Lose Final Two in State Tournament

After a big 4-0 win against Lone Peak to kick off the Utah State American Legion Tournament last week, the Helper Merchants lost their last two to end their season with an overall record of 14-12.

Despite being outhit by Lone Peak 4-3, Helper took advantage of seven walks to score two of its runs. Ty Anderson, Jadon Robertson and Tiger Thayn had the only hits in the game, all singles. Zac Bradley and Wyatt Wilson had an RBI apiece. Bradley also got the win on the mound, going all seven innings, while striking out five Lone Peak batters and giving up zero runs.

On Thursday against North Cache in the winner’s bracket, Helper got out to a 4-3 lead after two innings of play before Cache scored four in the fourth to take the 8-4 lead. The Merchants cut it to two, 8-6, in the fifth but couldn’t quite complete the comeback, losing 9-7. Cody Lowe went 3-4 with three singles and an RBI. Anderson, Taylon Abeyta and Thayn each added two hits apiece. Six different players had an RBI in the game. Adrien Sanchez took the loss on the mound, giving up eight runs on 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Looking to rebound against Layton in the 5 p.m. game on Thursday, Helper fell behind early, leading to the 8-4 loss. Jayden Flemett nailed a two-run triple in the game. Kameron Gunter went 2-4 with a double and a single with two RBIs. Robertson also had a double in the game. Lowe went 3 1/3 innings for the loss, giving up six earned runs on six hits.

Helper ends the season winners of 14 games compared to 12 losses.
