Braving the hot weather down south, the Helper American Legion baseball squad dropped its first two games of the Summer Classic Tournament in St. George over the weekend before winning its last two.
Facing off against St. George on Thursday, a team it already upended earlier this season 5-2 at home, Helper gave up 21 runs in the first three innings to lose the game 24-2. The Merchants managed just six hits in the game, with only two going for extra bases on doubles from Ty Anderson and Taylon Abeyta. Both players notched an RBI apiece in the game.
Cincinnati was next up on Friday. It scored nine runs in the first inning and coasted to the 10-1 win. JP Powell had a double, while Jayden Flemett knocked in the only run on a RBI single in the fifth.
Looking to secure their first win of the tournament in game two on Friday, the Merchants got home runs from Cody Lowe and Jadon Robertson to take the 9-8 win over Jackson Post #43. Each player had two RBIs in the contest.
Helper made it two straight wins with a Saturday victory over Eagle, 20-10. No box score was available from the game.
Helper, now 7-4 on the season, will host three games this week, beginning with a Tuesday doubleheader against Pleasant Grove, before hosting Dixie for a single tilt on Friday. Tuesday’s doubleheader will begin at 6 p.m. Friday’s contest will start at 8.
