It took two, one-run victories over formidable foes on Saturday for the Helper American Legion Merchants to earn a hard-fought tournament championship, and in the process, the #1 seed from the south in this week’s state tournament.
After beating Taylorsville on Thursday to advance in the southern region tourney in Pleasant Grove, Helper took out St. George 6-5 on Saturday and then outlasted Salem Hills 5-4 later on to earn the #1 seed in the state tournament, which begins Friday.
The Merchants needed four runs in the bottom of the seventh against St. George to earn a shot against Salem Hills.
Helper will take on Syracuse on Friday at 8 p.m. at Gates Field in Kearns.
