The recent Carbon County Commission meeting opened by presenting a retirement plaque to Mikel Johnson for serving in all departments for over 41 years. Commissioner Jake Mellor presented the award to Johnson with appreciation for dedicating so many years of hard work to the county.
Miss Outstanding Teen and Miss Southern Utah will be both competing in the upcoming Outstanding Teen Pageant Sept. 25-26. They came before the commission asking for a donation to help give them the chance to compete at the pageant. Commissioners asked the girls what their platforms were and what fundraising they have already done. The commission expressed that it knows the girls can represent Carbon County well at the pageant. They decided to donate $500 to cover the girls’ entry fees at the pageant.
A public hearing also took place to hear the community’s opinion on changing zoning district parcel number 2-1566-1 from RR-2.5 to R-1-20,000 to accommodate a division of two homes on one lot located at 1622 South Highway 6. The public hearing closed after a few questions from the commission and a motion was made to accept the request.
A letter requesting runoff and flood mitigation assistance from the National Resource Conservation service through the Emergency Watershed Protection program was also approved. Jason Llewelyn with the county’s emergency management team has been working the last month and a half to come up with solutions to help citizens sleep better at night knowing their homes won’t be flooded when they wake up the next day. They have searched and looked for spots that could be susceptible to flooding, especially T-spots. A project of removing excess mud and trees from previous floods will take place.
