Jeff Winget, an Emery County native, was recently selected as the new principal at Canyon View Middle School. Mr. Winget stems from a long line of educators, so his choice of a career in education was no surprise.
He received his teaching credentials as well as his Masters in Administration from Southern Utah University. He has been with the Emery School District for three years, teaching language arts at Emery High. Prior, he taught at Lake Powell for six years, Pinnacle Canyon Academy for 3.5 years, Cottonwood Treatment Center in Salt Lake for 1.5 years and Carbon High School for one year. He met his wife Shanda while teaching at Pinnacle and together they have five children.
Winget’s number one goal is to establish open lines of communication with the faculty and staff at the school, especially as he is new to Canyon View. He remarked that he plans to listen a lot in the first year, as he was instructed to do in his administrative training. Winget realizes that he is replacing a strong principal and he wants to continue to have great things happen at the school as well as build from the past.
When asked about the age of the students at the middle school, he responded that he feels it is important to meet the students’ emotional, mental and social skills first, as learning can’t take place until those needs are met.
