Emery County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

The Emery County Sheriff’s Office hosted wilderness-based rope rescue training in Huntington Canyon June 15-17. Members of the Utah National Guard 85th WMD Civil Support Team participated for the third year in a row. Training was coordinated by captain Kyle Ekker with Ken Eley of Black Dragon Rescue Systems instructing.

Teams reviewed and practiced rope systems on day one, followed by rescue scenarios on day two. Teams were tasked with locating, stabilizing, packaging and transporting patients down the steep slopes, through forested areas and across ravines using natural anchors and various line systems.

Communications specialist Bret Mills established communications between teams with the command post and communications trailer and ECSO dispatch center. Sinbad Desert Amateur Radio Club assisted in communications. Special thanks to the Forest Service for allowing the use of Old Folks Flat Campground for this training.
