The recent resignation of a council member in Emery Town necessitated the appointment of new councilperson. Carrie Childs was sworn in by Mayor Mistie Christiansen at the town council meeting on Wednesday evening.
The council also announced “Meet the Candidate Night” Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Emery County Recreational Center. This will give citizens the chance to meet the mayoral and council member candidates whose names will be on the ballot on Nov. 7.
Discussion continued regarding the purchase of a backhoe for the town. According to council members, leasing has become financially cumbersome and so it seems more practical to purchase. Councilman Varian Allen had found a used one from the Forest Service and will obtain more price quotes by the next meeting so action can be taken.
Also at the meeting, Mayor Christiansen called upon the council for approval to grant right of ways on town property for the water pipeline. This motion was made and approval was given.
Councilwoman Shalane Christiansen then reported the organization of a non-profit organization to help with the renovation of the old church building with the historical committee.
Councilman Allen reported on his responsibility on the Castle Valley Special Service District board. He was happy to report that a new drain would be installed in the southeast part of town. He also discussed the town’s purchase policy and the council decided to study it and make recommendations at the next council meeting.
Finally, a Veteran’s Day program was planned for Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. at the Memorial Monument in town. This will include a short program and refreshments. The council’s hope is to make this an annual event.
