The Emery Lady Spartans have impressively started their inaugural year on the soccer field, most recently taking a win against rival Carbon High. The game in Price saw Emery walk away with a 1-0 win in the preseason game.
The lone goal of the game was scored in the opening half by Emery’s Morgan Hurdsman. Mileena McElvaney led the defense from the net, notching the shutout for the Spartans.
“The goalie gets a shutout when the other team doesn’t score, but it is really a tribute to our defense,” Emery head coach Erik Nielsen said. “The defense stepped up and played well too. We had really good team play and we are really team orientated. It wasn’t one star that won the game for us but a collective effort of everybody.”
The second half saw more tough play between the teams, but neither were able to connect with the net.
“I know that the score doesn’t show it but we really played better in the second half,” Nielsen said. “They have really held together and we’ve made a lot of improvements. They’ve come a long way since we started in the beginning of August.”
The Dinos will look for a rebound as they travel to take on North Sevier on Tuesday. The Spartans will also play that day as they host Richfield at 4 p.m.
