Ruth Morris just hit a new milestone in her professional career.
The local educator recently directed a group of Creekview Elementary students in their pops concert, the students’ last performance of the year. For Morris, however, the Wednesday night concert was also a great way to end her first year teaching at the elementary school.
“It’s what I like,” Morris said in regards to music. “It’s my passion.” The teacher is no stranger to rests and quarter notes, as she has an extensive background in music and music education. Besides being a vocalist, she also plays and teaches the piano and performs the viola.
Morris also previously taught at Wellington Elementary before coming to Creekview, something she always wished to do.
At the Price-based school, she sees nearly every student come through her doors as part of a weekly rotation where they learn the basics of music technique.
Choir, however, is a different type of activity for those involved. Boasting nearly 60 students at her Christmas concert, Morris stays after school once a week where the option to perform in the choir is open to all students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade.
“We have fun,” Morris said in regards to the choir class, which she offers as a way for students to be comfortable performing and to enjoy their time on the stage.
The fun Morris tries to instill in her students came through Wednesday as the students sang and danced along to a variety of songs including contemporary classics by The Piano Guys and even Disney.
The concert for Morris wasn’t a last note, though. The educator will happily return to Creekview Elementary for another year full of music, laughter and fun for both student and teacher alike.
