An 18-month-old child from Orangeville is presumed to have drown near Halls Crossing in Lake Powell over the weekend.

According to an official from the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, the child went missing from a houseboat on Saturday evening around 7:30. Those on the houseboat immediately began searching for the child, who was reportedly not wearing a life jacket, in the boat and in surrounding water to no avail.

Parks service officials arrived shortly after and assisted in the search that went into the night. The search resumed Sunday morning as the Utah Highway Patrol Dive Team was called in to assist with its sonar equipment.

“We ran sonar until after dark last night,” an official from the sheriff’s office said. “They are back at it again this morning.”

The multi-agency search consists of teams from the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, National Park Service, Division of Natural Resources and the Utah Highway Patrol.

Officials have not released the name of the child or the family involved.
