Paul Bedont was born in West Valley City before making the journey down to Castle Country. He married his wife, Karen, who who serves as the vice principal at Carbon High School. The duo have four children together; their two oldest daughters work for the Carbon County Ambulance, their son works for Joy as a machinist and the Bedonts’ youngest daughter is a dental hygienist.
Beginning his career history, Bedont reflected on his 15 years spent working for Utah Power and Light. From there, once he located to Price, he worked for the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and finished off a degree at Utah State University.
Bedont then began working at the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), where he was an employee for nearly four years. Finally, he was hired permanently at the Price City Fire Station in 2005 as the fire chief.
There are many highs and lows that are associated with a job such as Bedont’s. When prompted to pick his favorite and least favorite parts of the role he plays, Bedont stated having the ability to help somebody just about every day and drug overdoses, respectively.
He then spoke briefly on the fact that the structure fire rate has dropped dramatically in four to five years in Carbon County. He prompted the community to always have smoke alarms, wear their seat belts and ensure that children are wearing their helmets when they are riding their bikes. Though Bedont is retiring, he is not ready to say goodbye to the world of fire fighting just yet.
He will be taking a year off and then hopes to return to teach at the fire academy. Previously, Bedont has written articles, sat on the state certification board and completed a great amount of work for the state chiefs. He plans to continue some of these duties with retirement and his main intent is to return to teaching.
Bedont and his family will be remaining in the Castle Country area. Currently, the advertisement for a replacement fire chief is being advertised locally and statewide. That closes on Aug. 8 and Bedont’s official date of retirement is slated for Oct. 1.
