After a crippling 98-29 defeat at the hands of intercounty rivals the Emery Spartans, the Green River Pirates participated in the 1A preview with other teams from the state.

Going up against the Escalante Moquis to start off the action, the Pirates opened with an 11-5 lead in the first. They continued their lead into half-time where the board read 22-8 in the Pirates’ favor.

Escalante responded strong in the third and the fourth, but wasn’t able to take the overall victory and fell to the Pirates, 40-36.

The Pirates’ following two bouts of action ended with different tunes as the team fell to Wendover and Parowan over the weekend.

The Wendover Wildcats grabbed a huge 40-8 lead in the first half and didn’t let go en route to their 58-32 overall win while the Parowan Rams similarly handed the Pirates a 68-48 loss.

Jacob Cox led his team over the weekend, putting up a total of 35 points, 13 of which came en route to the victory against Escalante, and five three-pointers over the three faceoffs.

Trey Vetere also managed to put up 29 points and four three-point shots while teammate Axel Avila managed 22 and three three-pointers.

The team will next host Wendover Friday evening as the Pirates look for their next victory.
