Remembering Rep. Lou Shurtliff

At the close of 2020, we lost Representative LuWanna Shurtliff. She was a dedicated public servant and we all mourn her loss. Speaker Wilson said, “We are all deeply saddened with the passing of Representative Lou Shurtliff. She was a beloved member of the House of Representatives but more importantly she was adored by her family and friends. We will miss her strong voice for children and passion for serving the community.”

Minority Leader Brian King also spoke of her passing, “The death of my friend and colleague, Lou Shurtliff, is devastating. This remarkable teacher and legislator shaped lives and served as few others do. She combined tenacity with compassion and wisdom to create a singular force for good in Utah. I will miss her.”

125 Years of Statehood

Utah celebrated its 125th birthday at the beginning of the month. On Jan. 4, 1896, President Grover Cleveland signed a proclamation granting statehood to Utah. Utah became the 45th state to join the Union. We love Utah and are lucky to call this beautiful place home.

Inauguration of Utah’s 18th Governor and 9th Lieutenant Governor

Last week, we celebrated the inauguration of Utah’s 18th Governor, Spencer Cox, and Lieutenant Governor Deidre Henderson, and other public state officials. Regarding their inaugurations, Speaker Wilson stated the following, “My colleagues in the House of Representatives and I look forward to working with Governor Spencer Cox and Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson. Likewise, I congratulate Attorney General Sean Reyes, State Auditor John Dougall and State Treasurer David Damschen as they open new terms. Though our state faces some challenges, our opportunities are even more abundant. I am confident we will work together to make this year one of opportunity, prosperity and happiness for the people of Utah.”

“I believe we are better than this

Speaker Wilson made the following statement regarding the events that unfolded on Wednesday, Jan. 6: “As a proud American, I am discouraged by the actions taken by protestors at the U.S. Capitol today. A peaceful transition has always been – and must always remain – a hallmark of our great nation. Protesting peacefully is an inalienable right, inciting violence is not. I believe we are better than this and it is time for us all to speak up for civility and order in our state and in our nation.”
