“Thank you for coming. It’s going to be a long great night,” said Emery County Business Chamber President Tyler Jeffs prior to Emery County’s Relay For Life event at Emery High School on Friday.

Seventeen teams in all participated in the event to raise money for cancer awareness and research. Susan Austin,В survivorshipВ chair, explained that around $130 million is put toward cancer research each year. She then urged survivors to register with the American Cancer Society because it’s the only way it can collect survivor rates.

“You can survive cancer and there is progress being made,” she said. “This is a chance to fight back.”

Afterward, Austin led the survivor walk in a lap around the track. Survivors were treated to a free dinner and t-shirt.

Entertainment was provided by the Guymon family, Jennifer Lopez, and local band Haywire.

One of the seventeen teams swam laps at the Emery County Aquatic Center instead of walking.
