Round one of the 2015 WORCS series was hosted in Taft, Calif. over the weekend. Price native Robbie Mitchell made the trek to the Golden State and raced his way to a podium finish to start the year on a positive note.
After a solid practice prior to the race, Mitchell felt confident. However, iffy weather begged the question if the race would even take place.
“The weather was very different from every other year that we have gone. It is usually sunny and hot, but this time there was heavy fog and it was cold,” Mitchell said. “While driving to the track Sunday morning, the fog was extremely thick. We could barely see the lines on the road.”
Despite the fog, racers lined upon Sunday with a couple miles added to the track, according to Mitchell. The extended track would increase each lap by a few minutes.
“I wasn’t lined up far enough inside to get the holeshot, but I came out of the first turn in third,” Mitchell commented. “I did my best to stick with the leaders, but they were riding great and I just didn’t have anything for them at the time. I just focused on distancing myself from fourth place and riding solid laps. It paid off in the end as I finished in third and gapped fourth place by almost three minutes by the end of the race.”
The third place finish put the Price native on the podium to start the WORCS series.
“I am really excited to start the season off on the box again, and I can’t wait to see what the future brings,” he said.
Mitchell will now prepare for the next WORCS race in Primm, Nev. The race is scheduled for the first week in February.
“Now, it’s time to get ready to another podium,” Mitchell concluded.
