Carbon School District Press Release

As with other elementary schools in Carbon School District, the new reading level program at Sally Mauro Elementary has shown tremendous success this year.

“We have had one fifth grader who has jumped 13 levels on the program,” said Sally Mauro Principal Jarad Hardy. “Actually, only four percent of the fifth grade class as a whole started the year where they should be in reading. Currently, 39 percent are at the level they should be at the end of the year and we still have a couple of months to go. Actually, we are seeing that kind of growth school wide.”

Hardy said that as a school, they have already passed the goal they set at the beginning of the year for reading levels.

“That goal was 40 percent for the whole student body and we have passed that already,” he stated. “Currently, we are at 44 percent. The kids we see that are turning in their reading calendars and are reading at home are the ones that are showing the astronomical growth.”

Many students are getting the school’s Bullpen awards for making or exceeding their goals this year. Those awards are given out quarterly.

Testing for RISE (Readiness Improvement Success Empowerment) began the end of April and Hardy said it will be interesting to see the results. RISE replaced the SAGE (Student Assessment of Growth and Excellence) as the state mandated test this year to measure school student performance. Review of material and learning began the end of March to prepare for the tests.

“We are working hard to do well on the tests and to complete a successful school year here as well,” said Hardy.
