The South Eastern Energy Producers Association (SEUEPA) hosted its annual banquet on Thursday night. The event is hosted each year to honor an individual that has impacted the Energy Industry in a positive way. This year’s recipient was Garth Nielsen.

Nielsen started his career with Peabody Mine in 1972. He has worked in many capacities in the industry, serving in almost every coal mining position possible. From a laborer with Peabody Mine, continuous miner operator and fire boss for Valley Camp Coal Company, Construction Foreman at Soldier Creek Coal, Continuous Miner Foreman at Tower Resources, several positions including General Mine Foreman at Energy West Mining, Mine Superintendent for Andalex Resources, Director of Mine Development at Interwest Mining, Director of Coal Mine Safety for the State of Utah and finally to his current position at Savage Industries, from which he will retire this year.

In a tribute to Nielsen, read by SEUEPA board member Kevin Asay, it was said that “Nielsen’s employees look at him as more than a boss, but as mentor and friend. He is concerned about them not only as employees and coworkers, but on a personal level. He treats them like family and would do anything to help anyone of them.”

The evening honored Nielsen with a dinner as well as entertainment by a 1950s cover band, Kitty and the Cruisers.

SEUEPA is an non-profit organization supported to protect energy producers, their families and businesses. To learn more about the organization, you can visit its website at www.seuepa.org
