Carbon County Sheriff’s Office Press Release

It has been brought to our attention that several local residents have recently mailed letters or cards containing money or gift cards to other areas. When the mail arrives, usually several days late, the letters have been opened and the money or gift cards were removed. This is the season to mail these types of items, and unfortunately one or more people have decided to take advantage of it.

Mail theft is out of our jurisdiction as it is a federal offense. However, if you are a victim of this crime, you can report it at your local post office. You can also report it online at https://postalinspectors.uspis.gov/conta…/filecomplaint.aspx or if you prefer, you can also report it by phone at 1-800-275-8777.

We recommend if you are mailing something of substantial value to insure and request a tracking number or signature upon receipt.

At this point, we are unsure if the thefts are occurring from the mailboxes or once they are in possession of postal workers.

If you see someone acting suspicious and looking in street-side mailboxes, please call dispatch at (435) 637-0890 and an officer or deputy will respond to investigate.
