Dozens of the most hard-working, talented, and intelligent students in Castle Country competed in the Southeastern Utah Region Sterling Scholar Competition on Tuesday evening at the Utah State University-College of Eastern Utah.

The event, hosted this year by Emery High, draws high school seniors together to compete in areas from English and mathematics, to visual arts and social science. Students spent many hours preparing for the competition, cataloging their accomplishments in order to compete against other students in their areas of scholarship.

After earlier being interviewed by judges with expertise in each area, the students and their parents and friends gathered to hear the winners announced. Emery High led the way with five winners, followed by Grand with three, San Juan with two, and Carbon and Monticello each with one.

The winners were: Erin Olschewski of Grand in English; Spenser Felberg of Emery in Mathematics; Jacob Tuttle of Emery in Science; Devin Wright of Monticello in Social Science; Bettymaya Foot of Grand in Foreign Language; Katie Hiatt of San Juan in General Scholarship; Tya Manygoats of San Juan in Business and Marketing; Elise Debry of Emery in Speech and Drama; Bryson Weaver of Emery in Music; Hayley Knouff of Grand in Visual Arts; Shylie Richardson of Carbon in Family and Consumer Science; and Alexis Stokes of Emery in Trade and Technical Education.
