The Spartans swam circles around their competitors on Friday, Jan. 15 as the Emery High School swim teams competed against American Leadership Academy, Millard High School and Delta High School, both taking first place victories by a margin of over 100 points.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Carter took first in a nail-biting 50-yard freestyle by coming in at 29.19, beating ALA’s Amy Peterson by a mere 42 milliseconds. Fellow Spartan Nate Gilbert took first in the 100-yard freestyle, completing the event in under a minute.

Emery then traveled to Price to face off against hometown rival Carbon High School along with Wasatch Academy, Gunnison Valley, North Sanpete and Telos Academy. The Spartans swam away with a first place win as a team along with several highlights for individual players.

Spartan Lexi Johansen came in first in the 100-yard butterfly at 1:33.90 before Carbon’s Abby Layton who was less than a second behind. Mirroring the close finish, Emery’s Devin Wilson scored a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.07) before Tyson Swasey of Carbon, also less than a second behind Wilson.

The Emery High School Swim Team will look to their next chance at victory as they travel to Juan Diego to face off against other Thursday evening.
