Traveling to Beaver last Wednesday, the opposing team defeated the Emery High School Wrestling Team 48 to 25. Gus Dalton (120 lbs.), McKoy Christiansen (126 lbs.), Nathan Urie (132 lbs.), and Ashton Dieli (160 lbs.) all pinned their opponents at the Beaver Dual matches. Chase Christiansen (106 lbs.) and Newt Oveson (152 lbs.) won by decision.
In the junior varsity matches Lon Huntsman (145 lbs.) had a record 0-2, Dax Hall (106 lbs.) 1-1, McKay Meccarillo (126) 2-0.
The Spartans next traveled to the Battle at the Pound held at Gunnison Valley High School, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22 and 23 to face off against a total of 15 teams. Emery wrestlers’ points earned the team third place.
Dieli was first in his weight class of 160 pounds. McKoy Christiansen (126 lbs.) and Ty Mecham (220 lbs.) both placed second. Oveson (152 lbs.) placed third. Urie (132 lbs.) landed a fourth-place win while Chase Christiansen (106 lbs.), Aaron Reeve (285 lbs.) and Delan Funk (170 lbs.) captured fifth. Justin Jennings (138 lbs.) brought home seventh and Tel Gardner(145 lbs.) and Dalton (120 lbs.) both scored eighth.
The junior varsity squad placed fifth of 13 teams with only five wrestlers. Hall (106 lbs.), Zac World (120 lbs.), Huntsman (152 lbs.) and Meccariello (126 lbs.) placed first. Kacey Jones (190 lbs.) placed ninth.
