Bryce Dugmore went seven solid innings for the Emery Spartans as they upended cross-county rival Carbon 5-2 for the first time since 2009.

With the game tied at 2-2 going into the bottom of the fifth, Tyson Roper laced a two-run double and the Spartans added another run in the inning to jump out to the 5-2 score. Dugmore was able to keep the Dinos at bay for the final two innings. He struck out three Dino batters in the game. Carbon’s Cole Fossat took the loss on the mound.

The Dinos outhit the Spartans 9-4 behind three hits from Anthony Maclean. Fossat also homered in the game for his third on the season. Fossat has now hit a home run in three straight games for the Dinos, all solo shots. Emery’s Dillon Wilstead also hit a double.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Emery then broke the tie in the third with another run before notching three in the fifth. Carbon added its final run in the top of the same inning.

The win for Emery was its first against Carbon since a 12-2 tilt on April 28, 2009. The Spartans beat the Dinos twice that season, outscoring them 28-15 in both games.

Emery (12-3, 8-0 Region 15) will host San Juan on Friday. Carbon (6-8, 2-0 Region 12) will host Payson on Tuesday.
