Emery’s opening game in the 3A State Tournament against Summit Academy did not go as planned as it was held to four hits and gave up 14 runs in and 14-0 blowout. The Spartans had six errors in the forgettable contest. The lone bright spot on offense was Jesse Barnett, who went 2-2 with a double and a walk.

The Spartans then had to play an elimination game against the Grand Red Devils. Down 1-0 in the fifth, Emery rallied back and scored three runs off a few Grand errors. Emery held off Grand to grab the victory, 3-2.

Koda Alton pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Spartans and only surrendered two runs on four hits. Kason Stilson got the four-out save to keep Emery’s hopes alive.

The win sets up a win or go home matchup with rival Carbon on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Juan Diego High School.
