With under a month to go in the regular season, both the Emery basketball squads are contending for top playoff seeding.
The high scoring Lady Spartans continued their winning ways with a road win over San Juan on Thursday night, 71-35. Despite the 71 points scored, Emery had averaged 85.6 points per game over its previous three games. The Lady Spartans are the highest scoring team in the state of Utah.
Megan Jensen led the Lady Spartans with 22 points on 9-16 shooting with 14 rebounds. Lainee Jensen was in double figures for the fifth straight game with 16 points. Kinlee Toomer added 11 points and Bailey Huggard chipped in nine.
The Spartan boys have dropped their last two Region 15 games, including a hard-fought 90-86 tilt at Grand on Wednesday.
Down by five at the half, Emery responded in the third to tie it up at 65 going into the fourth and final quarter.
Four players scored in double figures for Emery, led by Kyson Stilson’s 18. Brax Jensen, Cade Brazier and Easton Gordon all added 16 points apiece in the loss. Tyler Butler finished with eight points as well.
The Lady Spartans (15-1, 5-1 Region 15) will host a pair of games this next week, beginning with Richfield (14-1, 6-0 Region 15) on Tuesday. Emery’s lone loss of the season came at Richfield on Jan. 2, 49-39. The Lady Spartans will then host South Sevier (8-7, 4-2 Region 15) on Thursday.
The Spartan boys will host San Juan (6-8, 1-4 Region 15) on Friday and will then turn around for a road contest at Richfield (7-7, 1-4 Region 15) on Wednesday.
