For the second straight game, the Emery Spartans gave up 42 points and took a loss to run their record to 0-2 on the young season. Grand scored the game’s first 28 points en route to the 42-17 win.
Down 28-0 late in the second quarter, Jaxton Madsen hauled in a pass from Kyler Stilson from four yards out to cut the lead to three scores with 36 seconds left in the half. Grand, though, responded immediately, answering right back with a TD of its own just 20 seconds later for the 35-7 advantage at the break.
Emery went on to outscore Grand 10-7 in the second half, after a 23-yard TD scramble by Stilson in the third quarter and a Brock Winter 22-yard field goal in the fourth.
Emery (0-2, 0-0 3A North) will travel to play Payson (2-0, 0-0 Region 10) on Friday.
