It wasn’t always pretty, but the Emery Spartans beat the Richfield Wildcats 47-33 to commence Region 15 action in Castle Dale Wednesday night.
After a slow first quarter, in which it didn’t score its first field goal until the 2:07 mark, Emery came alive in the second, outscoring Richfield 19-11 en route to the 26-21 lead at the break. The Spartans got their first lead at the 3:43 mark of the second on three by Easton Gordon. Gordon scored eight straight points at one point to help Emery to the halftime lead.
Both teams struggled mightily in the third, with each team scoring just five points apiece.
Leading 32-28 early in the fourth quarter, Cade Brazier gave the Spartans their first 10-point lead after back-to-back threes, 38-28. With under a minute and a half remaining, Tyler Butler hit another three from the corner to seal the Emery victory. Butler hit the dagger immediately off the bench after sitting out the majority of the third and fourth quarters due to foul trouble. He finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Gordon led Emery with 12 points. Brazier chipped in 11 points, including three treys.
Emery (7-3, 1-0 Region 15) will host South Sevier (10-1, 1-0 Region 15) on Friday. South Sevier beat North Sanpete on Wednesday evening 92-42, nailing 18 threes in the game. The Emery South Sevier game can be viewed live on ETV Channel 10 at 7 p.m.
