Spartans Leave Annual Colorado Tourney With 2-1 Record

The Emery Spartans made their annual trek to Montrose, Colo. for a pre-season tournament over the weekend.

The Spartans were tripped up in their opening contest against Fort Collins, but rebounded in the games two and three to finish the weekend strong.

Ridge Nielson was credited with the loss against Fort Collins. Emery found itself in a 4-1 hole entering the sixth then it put up three to tie the game. Fort Collins responded with three runs in bottom of the same inning to take the 7-4 win.

The Spartans wasted no time in their opening game on Saturday against Eagle Valley with four runs in the first inning. They would go on to notch runs in every inning but the sixth en route to the 10-6 win. Easton Gordon, Nielson and Tristen Deabenderfer all recorded doubles in the game. Tyson Roper picked up the win on the mound.

In the weekend’s final game, Emery took on Alamosa in what would be a complete blowout. The Spartans recorded 20 hits in the 21-2 win that went just four innings. Bryce Dugmore got the win on the mound while Ethan Tuttle, Nielson, Tel Gardner and Roper each notched extra-base hits.

Emery (3-2, 1-0 Region 15) will host the Grand Red Devils (5-1, 0-0 Region 15) on Tuesday. Both teams will then play again on Friday in Moab.
