Spartans Rack up Over 400 Yards on the Ground in Win Over Grand

Emery junior running back Marco Mota rushed for two touchdowns andВ actuallyВ threw for another in the Spartan’s 41-7 pounding of the Grand County Red Devils Friday night.

Emery (2-0, 0-0 2A North) racked up 429 yards on the ground en route to its second win. Junior cornerback/wide receiver Bailey Faimalo caught a 12-yard touchdown from Mota on a halfback pass and also returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown in the blowout. Mota ran for 108 yards on 10 carries while senior running back David Dyer tallied 153 yards on just eight carries with a touchdown. Junior Jared Shakespeare added another touchdown on 67 yards rushing.

Grand’s (1-1, 0-0 2A South) lone touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on a Jacob Francis one yard touchdown run.

Emery will next host Manti Friday night at 7 p.m. to open up region play. The Templars beat the Spartans twice a season ago by a combined score of 62-6. The teams met once during the regular season and then in the 2A quarterfinals in which Manti crushed Emery 34-6 en route to a 2A championship.

Manti (1-1, 0-0 2A North) is coming of a 28-6 loss at Juan Diego on Friday after winning its home opener against Delta 28-0.
