In a game that featured 47 first-quarter points, the Emery Spartans kicked off the 2015 season on Friday with a much-deserved 57-44 win over last year’s 2A runner-up Summit Academy.

Emery found itself in a quick hole after the Bears scored just three plays into the game. The Spartans responded with three rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, two from Austin Allred and one from Bryce Dugmore. Emery scored 14 more points in the second half and went into the break with a 36-22 lead. Zach Jorgensen connected with Kolton Butler on a 45-yard touchdown pass to make it 50-31 just two minutes into the fourth quarter.

Dugmore scored four total touchdowns on the night while Allred had three, along with over 200 yards rushing.

The win was especially satisfying for the Spartans, who won just one game a year ago and struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball.

Emery (1-0, 0-0 3A North) will host Canyon View (1-0, 0-0 3A South) Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. The game can be viewed live on ETV Channel 6.
