After falling behind 12-7 in the first minute of the second half, the Emery Spartans ripped off 27 unanswered points Friday night to notch their first region victory, 34-12, on Carbon’s homecoming night.

Neither the Dinos nor the Spartans could get anything going offensively in a sloppy first quarter. Emery got on the board first on a Logan Cox 47-yard touchdown run with 3:40 left in the first half. The Dinos answered after a long drive that culminated in a Triton Abeyta TD pass to Izaac Sanchez from 10 yards out to enter halftime down just 7-6.

Looking for its first lead of the year, Carbon got a 51-yard TD scamper from Nate Olson just 36 seconds into the third quarter. The Spartans answered less than two minutes later as Kolton Butler took a screen pass from Zach Jorgensen to paydirt from 64 yards out. Cox then punched another one in from the four-yard line at the 6:04 mark for his second touchdown of the game. Emery scored twice more in the fourth for the 3A North Victory.

Olson was again over 100 yards rushing for the Dinos, the fourth time he’s done so in five games this season.

Both teams will be on the road this Friday, with Emery (3-2, 1-0 3A North) at Morgan (3-2, 1-0 3A North) and Carbon (0-5, 0-1 3A North) travelling to Grantsville (2-3, 1-0 3A North). Both Morgan (49-20 over Juan Diego) and Grantsville (28-10 over Union) won on Friday night.
