Two huge runs in the first and third quarters catapulted the Emery Spartans to a Region 15 opening win over the Grand Red Devils Wednesday night, 61-32.

Emery jumped out to a quick 15-0 lead in the first five minutes before the Red Devils got on the board. Grand then cut the Emery lead to five, 32-27, in the third before the Spartans ripped off a 12-0 run to win going away.

After beginning the game hot, Emery saw its lead dissipate in the second as Grand cut the lead to four, 21-17, on a three pointer. The Spartans then extended their lead to nine by half, 31-22.

Again the Red Devils strung together a few buckets in the third to cut into the Emery lead before Bowdie Jacobson’s three-point play and a Koby Butler bucket around the four-minute mark of the third pushed the Emery lead to 13, 40-27.

Butler led the Spartans with 18 points and has averaged 19.6 ppg in his last three games. Bryce Dugmore scored 10, which was a personal high. Beau Roundy and Jacobson pitched in nine and eight points, respectively.

Emery (11-1, 1-0 Region 15, #1 in 2A) will face its toughest test of the season as it takes on North Sevier (11-2, 1-0 Region 15, #3 in 2A) on Friday in Salina.
