The Spartans placed third in last year’s region competition.

The Emery Spartans track and field team is getting ready for its upcoming season. With many returning state qualifiers from last year and an incoming group of freshman to bolster the team, the Spartans are looking to compete in both boys’ and girls’ regions this year.

“We have some upper classman that are leaders but we also have some freshman that will come and contribute,” said head coach Eric Nielson.

With talented teams such as Richfield, Grand and Manti all in the same region, the competition is sure to be a challenge. “It’s a tough region,” continued Nielson. “I think we’ve got the athletes to be competitive. Our goal is to give ourselves a chance to win region.”

When asked if the boys or girls is expected to outperform the other this year, Coach Nielson again commented on his excitement for the upcoming season.

“Both teams should be competitive in our region,” he said.

Emery will head to the 2019 Red Rocks Invitational this coming weekend to open the spring season. Spring sports have struggled practicing with all the snow on the ground and the Spartans track and field team is no exception. For many competitors, this weekend’s meet will be their first opportunity to preform their events. Luckily, it is a long season with many more meets to improve one’s scores and times.
