It took all 32 minutes to decide the Emery Spartans’ contest against 3A Richfield Friday night in the Spartan Center. Richfield’s Porter Robinson stepped to the free throw line with .6 seconds left on the clock and needed to sink both to push the game into overtime. Robinson made the first and missed the second and Emery escaped with a 48-47 win to earn its fourth win in a row and third in four nights.
Beau Roundy connected on 5-7 free throws in the final quarter en route to a game-high 17 points. He also had four of Emery’s first six points in the game and six overall in the opening frame.
The game was tight throughout, with neither team leading by more than five points. Emery’s largest lead was five; Richfield’s was three.
Leading 47-43 with under a minute to play in the game, Koby Butler fouled Richfield’s Stetson Southwick behind the three-point line. Butler fouled out on the play and Southwick nailed all three free throws to get within one. Kolton Butler split a pair of free throws on the ensuing inbounds pass with 28.8 seconds left to push the lead to two, 48-46. Robinson then split a pair for Richfield and Roundy snagged the rebound on the miss to end the game.
Koby Butler had nine points in the game and Kolton Butler finished with six. Bowdie Jacobson and Bryce Dugmore added seven and six points, respectively.
