The Emery Spartans got a late touchdown run to complete the comeback in the team’s 13-9 win over the Manti Templars Friday night in non-region action.
After an Emery fumble recovery at the 4:05 mark of the fourth, running back Tel Gardner took a 37-yarder to the house to give the Spartans their first lead of the game, 13-9. Gardner then picked off Manti quarterback Marshall Dotson with under 20 seconds to play to secure the much-needed victory. It was the second interception in the game’s final minute for Emery.
Down 7-0 in the second, Emery gifted the Templars another two points on a botched punt snap that went through the end zone for the safety. The score remained 9-0 until the 4:54 mark of the third when Dalton Mckee punched it in from the half-yard line to cut the deficit to just three.
Emery (2-2, 0-0 3A North) will make the short trip to Price to take on cross-county rival Carbon (0-4, 0-0 3A North) on Friday. The game marks both teams’ region opener and the Dinos’ homecoming. Carbon was upended by Hurricane Friday night, 25-0.
