Frank Ori with Carbon County Recreation approached the commissioners on Wednesday evening, requesting approval for the fireworks that will be used at the Fourth of July celebration. The company to be used is called Lantis and the total cost will be $10,000. This amount is the same amount that was used for last year’s display. According to Ori, $5,000 would be paid now with the other $5,000 paid at the time of the show. The contract was accepted at the meeting, the amount is budgeted and the plans are moving forward.

Also granted at the commission meeting is a donation that is given to Graduation Spectacular every year. Commissioners Casey Hopes and Jake Mellor discussed what a good event Grad Spec is, giving a positive place for students to celebrate graduation and providing students with wholesome activities. The amount that is contributed yearly was once again given, which is $500.

The topic of spotlight hunting was discussed during the commission meeting. It was explained that 50 permits are being allowed that will expire by the end of the year. Anyone that wants another at that time will have to pay another $10 fee and apply. There will be a hiatus on the spotlight hunting from August 1 to November 30 during deer and elk hunting.

Limits for spotlight hunting have been given that include not being able to shoot within 600 feet of a dwelling place and no shooting in crossroads or highways. The ordinance allows a person to hunt with a hand-held spotlight. It is not for hunting out of the window or bed of a vehicle and does not allow headlight use, which is specifically forbidden by state law. Any light mounted to a vehicle may not be used as a spotlight. Ordinance officers that are asked by the state to take care of certain animals will not be required to purchase a spotlight permit.
